Our Principles
Ancient
Just as tortoises are believed to have existed since the era of dinosaurs, similarly, yoga too is ancient.
Adaptability
As reptiles, tortoises have many adaptations that help them survive, such as scutes, protective scales on tortoise shells that protect them from injury.
Longevity
The secret to longevity is primarily associated with breathing and metabolism rate. Tortoises typically take only 3-4 breaths per minute.
Calmness
Have you ever seen an angry Tortoise? (If you know one, that could be a topic for the next sci-fi cartoon).
Defense
The protective shell of a tortoise is symbolic to yoga in many different ways. The Kūrma āsana is representative of how a tortoise withdraws itself into the shell and protects itself.
Stability
The unique shape of the shell of tortoises naturally lends stability when it chooses to withdraw into it. Similarly in our purāṇās, the Lord manifested himself in the Kūrma avatāra.
